Earlier this month, Denver7 did a spotlight on the decommissioned Atlas II missile silo in Weld County, and it was an excellent reminder of the Centennial state’s rich history as a center point of the military industrial complex.

It’s also a good reminder of Colorado’s below ground world and a caution for safety. Earlier this month responders rescued an 18 year old after he fell 30 feet into a missile silo.

“The former nuclear warhead equipped Atlas E site was constructed in 1961. There were a total of four Atlas E sites in Weld County. This particular missile site was deactivated in 1965 and was turned over to Weld County. Tours are free and you can camp.”
