Back before covid, when the country wasn’t an absolute shit show and I left my house way more often, my husband and I used to go to 15-20 concerts per year. Ticketmaster would give us problems for at least three those shows, each year.
The Justice Department says that “Live Nation and Ticketmaster have used power and influence to insert themselves at the center and the edges of virtually every aspect of the live music ecosystem.”

According to the Denver Post, “The 124-page federal lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, echoes that language, saying Live Nation maintains its illegal monopoly ‘through a web of agreements, along with other anticompetitive acts, to make higher profits, stifle competition and innovation in the industry, and thereby harm concertgoers.’”
Um, yeah. That’s how Ticketmaster has worked forever. Why has it taken so long to address the clear monopoly on American entertainment?
I’m never quick to cheer on the government but, as a passionate concert goer, Ticketmaster / Live Nation has operated without appropriate oversight for a long time. During that time, they’ve proved that they use that liberty to exploit customers and prioritize greed.
This action by the DOJ follows Biden’s focus on criminalizing Ticketmaster ‘junk fees’ earlier in his administration, which makes you wonder:
Who at Ticketmaster crossed the Bidens?
