Kroger has proposed the sale of 579 supermarkets, six distribution plants, and one dairy plant in an attempt to allay monopoly concerns over its proposed merger with Albertsons. This is up from 413 stores proposed back in September of 2023.
The proposed divestments span 18 states, plus the District of Columbia. 91 of the stores, along with one distribution center and the Denver Dairy Plant, are in Colorado.
The proposed divestments would be sold to C&S Wholesale Grocers if the merger is approved. C&S, who currently owns other grocery stores, including the historic and iconic Piggly Wiggly, has committed to keeping all the acquired stores open and continuing to employ all frontline associates.
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 7 strongly opposes the proposed Kroger Albertsons merger.
In February of 2024, the US Federal Trade Commision, as well as Colorado’s Attorney General Phil Weiser, sued to block the merger, asserting that the initial proposal of divesting 413 stores, to C&S, would not be sufficient to prevent a monopoly.
