In April, days before the Colorado Springs Mayoral Election, local media reported on a cross burning in front then candidate Yemi Mobolade's campaign sign, with a racial slur was spray painted on the sign. City leaders and local press were outraged, the local NAACP called for accountability, and Mobolade won the election.

It has now been revealed that this was a hoax, reminiscent of the Jussie Smollett lynching hoax in Chicago, IL, and that Mayor Mobolade may have been in on it. From KRDO:

"Newly-filed federal court documents outline a Facebook message, texts, and a call between Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade and suspect Derrick Patrick Bernard, prior to an alleged hate crime hoax that was planned to influence the mayoral runoff election.

According to the court documents, Bernard sent Mobolade a Facebook message on April 13, 2023... "which read: “I know it’s crunch time sir but look . . . I spoke with some of my friends in other places and theirs [sic] a plot amidst . . . I’m mobilizing my squadron in defense and for the final push. Black ops style big brother. The klan cannot be allowed to run this city again.”

April 23, Bernard texted Mobolade, "I guarantee the finish.”

This fake hate crime was fabricated to influence an election, and the communications indicate it had the blessing of the Mayor. Three people have been federally indicted in the hoax, but the mayor is not among them. Ubiquitous online reports allege that the FBI found evidence of Mobolade's involvement, but that they declined to indict him because of his race.

For those indicted, according to Colorado Peak Politics, "All three were associated with a nonprofit called Family Flavors the Slide WBN that claims to be a broadcasting network and multimedia company. It appears to be a podcast with social media pages."

Per the Gazette, "The three have a trial conference and plea hearing scheduled for Jan. 14. Their five-day jury trial is set to begin on Jan. 21."
