It seems every day there is a problem with air travel. But a plane catching on fire and forcing an evacuation of the passengers without a jetway is notable. And it wasn't a small fire:
From CBS News:
The fire started just before 6 p.m. Mountain Time after the plane, a Boeing 737-800, diverted to the airport due to what appeared to be an engine issue.
The Federal Aviation Administration told CBS News in a statement that American Airlines Flight 1006 had departed from Colorado Springs Airport and was bound for Dallas Fort Worth International Airport when the "crew reported engine vibrations."
"After landing and while taxiing to the gate an engine caught fire and passengers evacuated the aircraft using the slides," the FAA said.
At press time, there are no statements from the FAA on their website or X account.
The fire comes as American Airlines is still managing the fallout of Flight 5342, the tragic accident in late January when the American Eagle Flight, en route from Wichita, Kansas (ICT) to Washington, D.C. (DCA) was struck by a military helicopter, killing everyone on board both aircraft, 67 souls.
The airline released their preliminary report on the accident and a statement on Tuesday:
“The entire American Airlines family continues to mourn the lives lost in the tragic accident involving Flight 5342. I am grateful to President Trump and Secretary Duffy for the FAA’s quick action immediately following the accident to temporarily suspend helicopter traffic around DCA, and for their commitment now to adopt NTSB’s urgent safety recommendations regarding the suspension of helicopter traffic around the airport. I also commend President Trump, Secretary Duffy and the FAA’s continued efforts to supercharge staffing and invest in a modern, state-of-the-art air traffic control system. We will continue to work with the Trump Administration and Congress to make our aviation system even safer.”
Thankfully, no one was hurt in Denver on Thursday, and the passengers were all rebooked for their final destinations on Friday.
I'd probably consider driving.
