As we previously reported, two elk hunters reported missing in southern Colorado earlier this month were found deceased after a nearly week-long search.

Conejos County Coroner Richard Martin has now reported that the preliminary signs are consistent with a lightning strike, including small burn marks and singed hair. No evidence of foul play was found. Final autopsy results are expected within 8–10 weeks.
Andrew Porter, 25, of Asheville, North Carolina, and Ian Stasko, 25, of Salt Lake City, Utah are reported experienced outdoorsmen, but they missed a planned check-in which prompted a search. Their vehicle was discovered two days later at the Rio de los Pinos Trailhead in Conejos County, with gear and wet clothing inside.
Search efforts involved ground crews, helicopters, drones, dogs, and volunteers, working in rugged terrain and stormy weather, and on September 18, their bodies were located under a tree about two miles from the trailhead. Their identities were withheld until the families were notified.
Colorado ranks among the nation’s highest for lightning-related deaths, highlighting the dangers of sudden storms in wilderness areas.
