"And as we stand on the mountain of this defining era in our city's history. It’s with great humility and gratitude that I stand before you and accept this responsibility as your elected mayor. As the city’s first elected black and immigrant mayor, I am a living promise to the American Dream, and I am deeply honored to have been entrusted with the responsibility to serve your families and help lead this remarkable city."

Mayor Yemi Mobolade spoke those words on June 6, 2023 when he was sworn in as the 42nd Mayor of Colorado Springs. A year later, Colorado Springs was ranked #3 in Best Places to Live nationwide.

But change takes time, and leftist policies need to marinate before they deliver.

Cross Burning Hoax

We always expected that Mobolade would bring the city down; after all, he was wrapped up in a reported hate crime hoax which is suspected to have won him the election. The Mayor denied involvement, despite direct communications that showed him involved with the suspect.

That trial is going on now, and the Mayor testified earlier this week. Reportedly, the defendant in the trial blamed the Mayor for the whole cross burning incident. From the Gazette:

Derrick Bernard Jr., 35, against the advice of his attorney Tyrone Glover, took the stand and claimed that then-candidate Yemi Mobolade was behind the plan and that he worked with state Rep. Regina English, D-Colorado Springs, to set the stage for him to win the election.

Bernard, whose testimony differed from that previous witnesses, was questioned about English and claimed some of her election aides were present at an April 23, 2023, cross burning that, along with defacing one of Mobolade’s campaign signs with a racial slur, led to an indictment alleging a staged hate crime. At one point, Bernard suggested that supporters of Mobolade's election opponent Wayne Williams, who is now on one of Mayor Mobolade's advisory boards, may have pulled off the "hoax."

"Who knows? Maybe he did it," Bernard said.

Closing arguments are expected Friday in the case.

The Decline of the City

Perhaps the decline of Colorado Springs is due to the Mayor's preoccupation with his hate crime hoax. It must be something, though, because Colorado Springs is now ranked #406 in the Best Places to Live rankings. That's down from #3 the year prior. From KRDO:

"Colorado Springs was in the top 16% for crime, which is not really a designation that you want to see when looking for a place to live," said Erika Giovanetti, Consumer Lending Analyst with U.S. News & World Report. According to Giovanetti, both violent and property crime rates are significantly higher here compared to other mid-sized cities. "A lot of those cities are about the same size or smaller than Colorado Springs. And in fact, a lot of them are smaller," Giovanetti said.

The article goes on to blame the lagging job market, rising crime, and unaffordable cost of living. None of those things are unimpacted by terrible city leadership. Mobolade is running the city like Johnston runs Denver and Polis runs Colorado -- with a fevered leftist wish list and blank checkbook.

The outcome of progressive Democrat control of government is always the same:

Devastation.

Is there any better metric for than plummeting from #3 to #406 in 12 months? Also, what does that say about the rest of Colorado when, while being 406 in the nation, Colorado Springs is #7 in the Centennial State?

Rough Week for the Mayor

The rankings pour salt in open and raw wounds for Mobolade. Regardless of what the court decides, the majority of the state believes he did the cross burning thing to garner sympathy for votes. Mobolade lost this case in the court of public opinion last November when the details of the story came out.

As a result, the people have lost confidence in his ability to lead the city -- rightfully considering the affordability and quality of life effectively dove off Pikes Peak.

"...today, I stand here to advance this vision for our city. A vision for an  inclusive, culturally rich, economically prosperous, safe, and vibrant world-class American city," Mobolade said in 2023.

Colorado Mayors are engaged in a race to the bottom; and between Mobolade and Johnston, it's too close to call.
