Minnesota Governor Tim Walz told a Seattle fundraiser that he intends to welcome more Somali immigrants to his state, even as his administration faces federal scrutiny over massive social-services fraud tied to some members of that community, the National Pulse reported this week.
Walz criticized federal immigration enforcement under Trump, arguing that immigrants in Minnesota were being unfairly “demonized” and “terrorized” by ICE actions. He vowed to “defend” immigrant communities in the state, delivering the remarks to a reported crowd of more than 1,000 attendees.
In 2024, Ilhan Omar is quoted as saying:
“We Somalis must have that confidence in ourselves that we are able to do what we want to do. ... We live in this country, we pay taxes in this country, and we have a real voice in this country. This is a country in which one of your own sits in Congress to represent your interests. ... As long as I’m in Congress, Somalia will never be at risk of its waters being stolen by Ethiopia or others. The U.S. will not dare to support anyone against us, to steal our land or our oceans.” (Note: Grok fact checking says the captions are misleading in the videos going around; claims this translation is verified accurate.)
If these statements are accurate, it is a clear dual loyalty. Omar does not sit in Congress to represent the interest of Somalia or all Somali-Americans. She is there to represent the interests of all constituents in her district, regardless of their nation of origin or immutable characteristics.
In related news, Omar is reportedly under investigation for immigration fraud. Border Czar Tom Homan discussed the allegations in an interview with Newsmax, lamenting that the statute of limitations was a barrier for prior investigations.
If she continues to give aid and comfort to those committing immigration fraud, the statute of limitations should reset. (That might require new law, but I’d argue you could interpret current law in that way.)
Homan also addressed the 50% of visas in Minnesota that Kristi Noem said were fraudulent in that interview. And that brings us full circle to Walz doubling down on Somali interests. The double down could/should make Walz a federal criminal.
Regardless, the immigration precedents established in Minnesota will have implications for Colorado.
Let’s see what happens.
