The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found that over 1,000 cases are impacted by the faulty DNA work of a forensic scientist. CBI has been investigating, and the results are shocking. They demand answers for the accused in the cases, and the revelations in this story should refocus Americans' attention on the rights of the accused.
But the language used in this investigation also highlights the plausible deniability in government that we usually reserve for discussions about Colorado elections. From FOX31:
“On Nov. 6, 2023, CBI announced that Yvonne “Missy” Woods, a forensic scientist within the agency for about 29 years, was no longer working there and was subject to internal affairs and criminal investigations because of DNA anomalies in her work.”
Election symmetry: Sure, there are anomalies, but we have seen no evidence that Woods was manipulating DNA results on purpose, you crazy conspiracy theorist! She was probably just lazy for 30 years.
“According to the report, Woods admitted to deleting some historical data on a DNA instrument but said she was told to do so during quarterly maintenance. However, the manufacturer did not recommend the deletion, according to the internal report.”
Election symmetry: Log files were deleted during the trusted build? The vendor (manufacturer) told us how to do the trusted build. Deleting log files is how you do a trusted build. The manufacturer told us to do it!
It gets even better. Coworkers raised questions about Woods’ work as far back as 2014, but the complaints were waived off as innocent mistakes.
“That year, a coworker allegedly questioned how Woods tested evidence in a case and reported those concerns to a technical leader. In reviewing the incident, one individual said she found a deleted value in one dataset. She told the investigators she ‘felt at the time this was on purpose, but allowed it was possible to accidentally highlight a value and delete it without knowing.’”
Election symmetry: Glitch. Erroneous code. Human error. It was a whoopsie! There is simply no evidence that this was anything other than an innocent mistake. Also, we didn’t investigate this as anything other than an innocent mistake.
The point here is that the government always claims whoops when investigating itself. But the rights of the accused are paramount in our justice system, and whoops doesn’t, or at least shouldn’t, cut it. (It shouldn’t be a sufficient excuse in elections either, but that’s a whole other discussion.)
Anyone convicted in a case where Woods was involved should immediately appeal their conviction and demand more answers about her work. They should also push back on the “laziness” excuse that CBI is attempting to sell.
Well done to the Innocence Project for seeing this through to investigation. If Woods’ rigged DNA analysis put even one innocent person in prison, she should be locked up forever and those who dismissed complaints as prior whoopsies should lose their jobs.
Accountability matters.
