This week, Colorado football coach Deion Sanders sat down with Michael Strahan on "Good Morning America" and opened up about his May 2025 bladder cancer diagnosis and treatment, sharing that he is now cancer-free after a successful surgery to remove his bladder, followed by a reconstructive procedure.
"I prayed on it. And I'm aggressive, man," he explained his decision. "I ain't waiting. I ain't sitting back on the curb waiting to go slowly but surely do whatever's gonna happen."
- Deion Sanders
Sanders, 58, had previously revealed the diagnosis in a video posted to social media. The surgery involved the removal of his bladder, followed by a reconstructive procedure. His oncologist said the cancer was caught early and considers Sanders “effectively cured,” pending continued recovery.
The procedure is the latest in a series of health challenges for the Pro Football Hall of Famer. In recent years, Sanders has dealt with circulation issues that led to the amputation of two toes and multiple surgeries related to blood clots. Despite those setbacks, he has continued coaching with limited mobility.
Sanders took over as head coach at Colorado in December 2022 after a successful run at Jackson State, where he compiled a 27-5 record and won two SWAC titles. In his first season at Colorado, he led the Buffaloes to a 4-8 record, an improvement from the team’s 1-11 performance the previous year. His presence has sparked national attention, boosted recruiting, and revived the program’s profile in college football.
