Governors Jared Polis of Colorado and JB Pritzker of Illinois have announced the formation of Governors Safeguarding Democracy (GSD), an interstate alliance of governors. The two Democrats will co-chair this new initiative which, according to Pritzker, is about “pushing back against increasing threats of autocracy.”
According to its website, GSD is “a nonpartisan alliance of governors that works together to uphold and fortify American democracy. We strengthen the foundation of American democracy by catalyzing collaboration across state lines. Working together, we leverage the collective strength, experience, and institutional knowledge in governors’ offices across the country to craft laws and policies that protect the rule of law and serve the people of our great states.”
GSD’s stated goal is to be non-partisan. Though he would not say who, Pritzker said he has been in conversation with Republican governors. GSD’s advisory board, Governors Action Alliance (GovAct), consists of six former governors, two of whom are Republicans—Bill Weld of Massachusetts and Arne Carlson of Minnesota, both left office in the 90s.
GSD’s co-chair would not go so far as to directly state that the alliance was formed in response to the incoming Trump administration. “This is about whatever threats come our way at the federal level. It’s not about a particular threat,” said Polis.
He elaborated, “It’s about being proactive around educating people and making sure governors have the tool kit to support our small-d democratic institutions as well as, of course, reacting effectively and coordinating (the) response to any threats to our democracy that come from any president or from foreign powers.”
Still, the timing of the announcement on Wednesday, November 13, one week after the election, is notable.
