On Monday December 1st, Elbert County Clerk Rhonda Braun sent the following the letter to the Colorado Clerks, the Executive Director of the Colorado County Clerks Association Matt Crane, and Governor Polis.
"It is stated that Ms. Peters’ statements have fueled harassment, threats and intimidation against election officials. I would never minimize the threats to election officials, but I question whether the credible threats received are all the result of statements from Tina Peters. This request from the Colorado County Clerks sends a message that those that question elections should be punished and silenced," Clerk Braun stated.
"I want to clarify my position objecting to the CCCA letter to Governor Polis. This is not a change in my
stance regarding First Amendment rights, nor is it my intent to cause division. I fully support Colorado
County Clerks and I agree that they work with professionalism, accuracy, and integrity, even under
tremendous pressure. I fully condemn any threats to election professionals or their families, and those
that threaten election officials should be held responsible.In December of 2023, the CCCA issued a Call to Action that, among other things, called for election
deniers to be treated with contempt and disdain. I objected to that Call to Action, as I believe in
protecting First Amendment rights even if I don’t share the same opinion. I stand behind my response
to the 2023 Call to Action.I cannot stand behind the call to deny the federal request on the basis of what Ms. Peters may say.
Concerns in the letter to Governor Polis include “Ms. Peters would continue disseminating the same
false narratives” “Her pattern of knowingly repeating false claims…” and “…if she were allowed to use
a new legal narrative to further these falsehoods”. It is stated that Ms. Peters’ statements have fueled
harassment, threats and intimidation against election officials. I would never minimize the threats to
election officials, but I question whether the credible threats received are all the result of statements
from Tina Peters. This request from the Colorado County Clerks sends a message that those that
question elections should be punished and silenced.I believe Clerks and the citizens they serve share the goal of maintaining trust in our elections and our
elected officials. False narratives can be countered with truth and facts without sending the message
that those that question should be silenced. Our Colorado Clerks are a great source of accurate
information. I believe that Clerks across Colorado are willing to listen to respectfully presented
concerns and address them.Respectfully,

To date, Clerk Braun is the only Colorado Clerk to stand up for the First Amendment.
