The two students critically injured in the September 10 shooting at Evergreen High School are showing signs of recovery, according to their families and updates from local officials.
The fourteen-year-old and eighteen-year-old victims remain hospitalized following the attack by a 16-year-old classmate who opened fire inside the school before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities say lockdown procedures and the brave actions of fellow students helped prevent further injuries.
The younger victim, whose name has not been publicly released, is being hailed for his courage during the initial moments of the attack. According to a statement from his family, reported in the Denver Post, the boy and a friend confronted the shooter before any alarms had sounded or lockdowns were in place—actions that gave others time to flee and for the school to initiate emergency procedures.
Despite being shot at close range, the 14-year-old managed to escape the building and warn other students. He made it to a nearby recreation center, where an EMT-trained firefighter began providing life-saving first aid. Since then, he has undergone multiple surgeries and remains hospitalized. His condition is improving, and he has been able to communicate through writing.
“He immediately asked about his classmates, teachers, and the other victim,” his family said. “His focus was on others, even in the aftermath of his own trauma.”
The family has called for long-term support for all those affected by the shooting and emphasized the need for meaningful action to improve school safety. They are not accepting donations themselves but have encouraged the public to support the family of the 18-year-old victim, Matthew Silverstone, who remains in critical condition.
Authorities confirmed that the shooter roamed the school’s hallways for approximately nine minutes before exiting the building and shooting both Silverstone and himself as police closed in.
As the Evergreen community begins the long road to healing, the families of the victims say they are grateful for the outpouring of support but stress that recovery will take time—and lasting commitment.
