Local authorities in Evergreen gave several press conferences Wednesday about the school shooting that left the shooter dead and one student in critical condition.
Here’s what we know:
The shooter has been identified as 16-year-old Desmond Holly. Holly reportedly used a revolver in the act, and brought to school “quite a bit of ammunition.” He repeatedly fired the weapon and reloaded multiple times.
According to AP News, Authorities believe Desmond Holly was radicalized by some extremist network. Officials have not yet identified which network, how communication or influence occurred, or the specifics of his radicalization. It is not confirmed whether the attack was targeted (i.e., Holly had specific individuals in mind) or random. Investigators are considering both possibilities given the number of rounds fired and the reloading behavior. Information about motive is a hypothesis and not legally or fully confirmed.
The shooting took place at Evergreen High School, Jefferson County, Colorado, around 12:24PM on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.
Two students were shot; one remains in critical condition and the second victim has been released from the hospital. One of the victims was shot inside the school; the other victim was shot outside on a street behind the school. The shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot later in the day Wednesday.
The full-time officer was on medical leave, and the part-time officer was not present, having been called away earlier. Thus, no SRO was on site at the time of the shooting. Deputies arrived on scene within ~two minutes, and contact with the shooter was made within five minutes.
There is surveillance video from inside the school recording his movements; search warrants have been issued (for room / locker / backpack / phone / home). The family is cooperating.
