Civil rights are a big topic in Colorado right now, with several recent actions being threatened or filed in the courts in recent days.

She might be peaking. It is Colorado, after all. (Grok)

The ACLU is threatening action against Sheriffs that cooperation with ICE. A House rep is suing Lyft after alleging sexual assault while using their service. In the most disturbing case we read, young minority kids are being racially attacked with no recourse from a Colorado school district.

Legal actions, until litigated, are just allegations, and everyone accused has the right to the presumption of innocence. Courts, and especially Colorado courts, are now known for being used to settle political scores and reshape American society under color of law, so skepticism is required and the rights of the accused remain paramount. Justice is based on facts, evidence, and law – not emotionally charged headlines.

Learn more about each of these cases below.

Liberal Group Threatens to Sue Law Enforcement in Blue State for Helping ICE
Fox News – A liberal activist group in Colorado is warning sheriffs in the state that they will hold them personally liable and sue if they cooperate with President-elect Trump's mass deportations plans or with ICE officials in any way, including working to deport illegal immigrants. In a letter to Colorado sheriffs signed by ACLU of Colorado executive director Deborah Richardson and legal director Tim MacDonald, the group warned of severe personal consequences for law enforcement officials in Colorado if they comply with any ICE requests, including ICE detainers, which often keep the agency from having to undertake dangerous arrests in public spaces.

Colorado Lawmaker Sues Lyft Over Sexual Assault by a Driver, Calling for More Protections for Riders
Denver Post – A Colorado state lawmaker is suing the ride-hailing company Lyft and a local transportation outfit after she says she was sexually assaulted by her driver on a ride last year. Rep. Jenny Willford, a Northglenn Democrat, spoke about the new lawsuit during a news conference in the state Capitol on Tuesday. She said she was sexually assaulted in February by a man ‘using someone else’s profile’ and who ‘wasn’t the driver presented to me by the Lyft app.’ Her suit accuses Lyft of failing to ensure its drivers pass required background checks and don’t share profiles. It alleges that Lyft rolled back safety protections the company announced after media outlets reported several years ago on the extent of sexual assaults by drivers on rides arranged through the apps of Lyft and its main competitor, Uber.”

Families Accuse Douglas County School District of Rampant Racism and Dismissed Complaints
9NEWS – A lawsuit filed by families of biracial children in Douglas County contains screenshots and logs of social media chats they hope will bring accountability and policy change in the district. Three families are mentioned as plaintiffs in the lawsuit against the Douglas County School District and a principal at Castle Rock Middle School. The lawsuit was filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Colorado. “...these students were regularly called the N-word, threatened with violence like lynchings and shootings, subjected to various racial and ethnic cleansing jokes, repeatedly called monkey and similar degrading epithets, exposed to ridicule and other forms of harassment by their peers…,” the lawsuit says.

Everyone in Colorado should have equal and unobstructed access to their civil rights. Liberty and justice for all.
