Another set of wolves is set to be relocated from British Columbia to Colorado in 2025. The proposed counties for relocation are Garfield, Eagle, and Pitkin counties.

Ten gray wolves were introduced into Grand County in 2023. Thus far, however, the program seems to have largely failed, with some of the wolves dying while others were recaptured after threatening livestock. According to Rob Edward, president of the Rocky Mountain Wolf Project, bringing in new wolves is vital to the continuation of the reintroduction project.

“It represents the hopes and dreams of so many people who want to see wolves restored here in Colorado…A couple have died and some have been pulled back into captivity for the time being. So we need to have more wolves out on the ground out in Western Colorado.”

Tim Ritschard, president of Middle Park Stockgrowers Association, wants to see a pause in the program until issues can be addressed. He points out that there has been a lack of transparency and communication, going all the way back to when the first set of wolves was released in December of 2023.

“I mean, we haven’t even seen the reimbursement yet,” said Ritschard, referring to depredation of livestock. “This is our livelihood, this is our way of life. It’s different when you’re the one being impacted rather than sitting somewhere that you are not being impacted.”
