Denver Police Deparment on Facebook

Two Denver Sheriff’s Deputies were arrested Thursday on felony assault charges tied to an incident involving an at-risk adult, according to reporting by Denver 7. The Denver Gazette further reported that a Denver Police Department officer was separately arrested on allegations of tampering with evidence related to the same underlying case.

Denver Police arrested Sgt. Carla Gentempo and Deputy Jason Gentempo on Dec. 11 on suspicion of third-degree assault of an at-risk adult, a Class 6 felony under Colorado law. The charges stem from an Oct. 17 incident in which a man who uses a wheelchair reported that two people punched him in the head, stomped on his phone, knocked him out of his wheelchair and then left in a white truck. The victim told investigators he has a permanent disability from a past car crash.

Both deputies were placed on investigatory leave following their arrests. Carla Gentempo joined the department in 2010 and worked in the administration division, while Jason Gentempo joined in 2005 and was most recently assigned to the Downtown Detention Center. The Public Integrity Division is conducting the investigation under the oversight of the Office of the Independent Monitor.

Also on Dec. 11, Denver Police arrested Officer Henri Soni on suspicion of tampering with evidence, along with other felony counts related to his handling of the assault investigation. Soni was already under investigation for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman he met while on duty. Prosecutors allege that Soni failed to file an official police report after responding to an assault call on the same night as the Oct. 17 incident, and instead communicated with the suspected assailants without documenting evidence properly.

Investigators reviewing Soni’s body-worn camera footage found that he spoke with the reporting party and recorded surveillance video that showed the assault before leaving the scene. However, a required report was never filed, prompting a separate internal review that led to felony charges. Denver police have suspended Soni without pay pending the outcome of the criminal process.

Denver police and prosecutors continue to investigate all aspects of the cases, which link the actions of the deputies and the police officer to the same underlying assault incident. Officials have encouraged anyone with additional information to contact law enforcement.
