Children’s Hospital Colorado has suspended all gender-affirming medical care for patients under 18 following a federal investigation by the US Department of Health and Human Services.
Hospital officials said the investigation places the hospital’s Medicaid and Medicare funding at risk, prompting the decision. The suspension applies to new prescriptions and renewals for minors. The hospital stated it has never provided gender-affirming surgeries to patients under 18, and care for patients 18 and older will continue.
Denver Health also announced it is suspending gender-affirming care for youth. The health system had already stopped performing gender-affirming surgeries in early 2025.
The federal investigation stems from regulatory actions tied to a Trump administration executive order aimed at ending gender-affirming procedures for children. Federal officials have asserted that such treatments for minors do not meet professionally recognized standards of care. Colorado has joined other states in a lawsuit challenging the federal declaration.
