Following the dismissal of an unspecified number of employees from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in Boulder last week, a group of Democratic lawmakers is demanding an investigation, labeling the move “short-sighted.”

While some officials criticized the layoffs, others argue they were long overdue.

NOAA, responsible for hurricane forecasting and climate research, is the latest federal agency to experience job cuts under the Trump administration’s initiative to reduce “waste, bloat, and insularity” in government.

The White House previously instructed agency leaders to implement “large-scale reductions in force,” focusing on offices not legally mandated and those prioritizing “diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.”

According to the Denver Gazette, Representative Joe Neguse (D-Boulder) and Senators John Hickenlooper and Michael Bennet sent a letter to Rodney Anderson, Acting Inspector General for the U.S. Department of Commerce, urging an investigation into the ongoing actions of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

NOAA was a big topic of discussion during Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick's confirmation hearings, with Democrats concerned about NOAA's fate inside the Department of Commerce. NOAA resides inside the Department.

When questioned about proposals from "Project 2025" to dismantle NOAA, Lutnick responded, "No," indicating his disagreement with such plans. In his written responses, Lutnick stated, "It is premature to discuss any specific recommendations," when asked about changes to NOAA's structure, and he broadly expressed support for the agency, acknowledging its critical role in weather forecasting, climate data, and fisheries monitoring.

As 40% of Colorado's budget comes from the federal government, the Trump Administration's ongoing cuts to federal bureaucracy are expected to hit the Centennial State hard. We aren't convinced they'll change their behavior, thought.

Colorado commies would burn the state down before abandoning their utopian aspirations.
