The Sundance Film Festival is moving from Park City, Utah to Boulder, Colorado, starting in 2027. The Sundance Institute made the announcement on its blog and in a press conference held in Boulder on March 27.
Boulder beat out two other finalists: Cincinnati, Ohio and Salt Lake City, Utah. The festival plans to take advantage of downtown Boulder’s array of venues, parts of the University of Colorado campus, and the Pearl Street Mall.
“Boulder is an art town, tech town, mountain town, and college town. It is a place where the Festival can build and flourish. This is the beginning of a bold, new journey as we invite everyone to be part of our community and to be entertained and inspired. We can’t imagine a better fit than Boulder,” said Sundance Institute Acting CEO Amanda Kelso.
In addition to Boulder’s unique location and culture, the Sundance Film Festival was offered a $34 million state tax credit by the State of Colorado.
Founded in 1985, the festival features full and short length, independent films of both fiction and documentary genres. Notable films that premiered at the festival include Napoleon Dynamite, Little Miss Sunshine, The Blair Witch Project, and An Inconvenient Truth.
