In May, we reported on James Michael Chevrier, a 38-year-old school psychologist working at Green Mountain High School in Lakewood. Chevrier was arrested following a Safe2Tell tip that accused him of sexually assaulting a teenage girl on school grounds. At the time of his arrest, Chevrier was also working at Bear Creek High School and had previously been employed at Evergreen High and in the Cherry Creek School District.

Lakewood Police Department

According to the Denver Gazette, Chevrier pleaded guilty on Monday.

A former psychologist for Jeffco Public Schools pleaded not guilty to charges including sexual assault on a child less than 15 years old. James Michael Chevrier, 38, pleaded not guilty on Monday in a Jefferson County district court to charges of child sexual assault, soliciting for child sexual prostitution, two counts of possession with intent to sell drugs and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, according to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office. The not guilty plea comes more than two months after Chevrier was arrested by the Lakewood Police Department on May 13.

The case continues a trend of predatory teachers in Colorado, fueling speculation about Colorado's sanctuary status for child predators. As we published in May:

  • Strasburg (December 2022): Clifford Smith, a 66-year-old teacher at Strasburg High School, was arrested for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old exchange student. (CBS News)
  • Douglas County (June 2024): James Thomure, a 55-year-old teacher at Douglas County High School, was arrested for sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. (KKTV)
  • Fort Collins (July 2024): Evan King, a 50-year-old teacher and assistant track coach at Lincoln Middle School, was arrested for inappropriately touching students. (9 News)
  • Pueblo County (August 2024): Russell Davis, a former teacher in District 70, was sentenced to 20 years of probation after pleading guilty to sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. KRDO
  • Montrose (January 2025): Lisa Thyre, a teacher at Colorado West Christian School, was arrested for engaging in inappropriate communications with a student, including unlawful electronic sexual communications. Denver 7 Colorado News (KMGH)
  • Lakewood (February 2025): Kay Ewer, a 28-year-old paraprofessional at Brady Exploration School, was sentenced to four years in prison for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old special needs student. She also introduced him to fentanyl and urged him to bring a gun to school to shoot a colleague. (NY Post)

And that's not even all of them.

Side note: Many of these predators obtain bond pending appeal -- deemed by the courts to not be a significant threat to the community (where there are children). In contrast, Tina Peters was denied bond pending appeal because she is too big a danger -- because of what she might say.

Colorado's "justice system" seems broken.
