We're still in the middle of the election period in Colorado, and a winter storm has slowed county efforts to finish counting.
Here's what we're tracking.
Votes are still being processed across the Centennial State, but Speaker Julie McCluskie is already actioning the outcome of the 2024 General Election. The incoming Colorado House members-elect voted on leadership Friday, over a video call and while House races are still being determined.
The HD19 race won't be known until Thursday, according to the Colorado Sun, as thousands of ballots still need to be cured. The AP previously called the race before rescinding on Friday. Several counties are behind in counting due to the snow. Clerks also told Colorado Free Press that a potentially widespread scanning issue is requiring ballots to be duplicated, further slowing the process.
The HD50 race was decided Friday night after Republican Ryan Gonzales overtook Democrat Mary Young. Young reportedly called Gonzales to concede Friday evening.
While these outstanding seats may not affect the balance and the outcome of leadership elections, why do their votes not matter? Further, the election period is supposed to be sacred and wholly respected to ensure that every vote is counted.
Why are HD19 and HD50 voters' voices are not represented in the leadership vote? Not a good look.
Beyond the Colorado General Assembly, the race for Congressional District 8 is still too close to call, and Republican challenger Gabe Evans overtook Democrat incumbent Yadira Caraveo late Friday evening.
If Evans flips the seat, the Colorado Congressional delegation will be equally divided with four seats for each of the two major parties, and Democrats' narrative about Colorado shifting blue will take another hit.
In a public letter on Tuesday, Boulder County Republicans called for an independent investigation into the BIOS password leak out of the Secretary of State Office. Read the letter here:
The Denver District Attorney's Office (JD2) announced an investigation into the matter of the password breach earlier this week, and the El Paso County District Attorney (JD4) has now joined the investigation as well. "The Colorado Department of State said they are fully cooperating and are allowing the investigation to speak to any employee in the office," according to KOAA.
Secretary has named a law firm to investigate herself, according to CPR. "The Secretary of State’s office has contracted with the Denver law firm Garnett Powell Maximon Barlow & Farbes to conduct an outside investigation of the situation, with attorney David Powell leading it. Griswold said any potential consequences for members of her staff would occur after that wraps up."
Clerks also confirmed to CFP that Secretary Griswold herself is calling impacted Clerks to apologize for the security breach and offer additional resources during the election period, Matt Crane and the Colorado County Clerks Association are offering the help of former clerks as well.
Several clerks have now called for Griswold's resignation, both publicly and privately.
The Libertarian Party of Colorado appealed their case to the Colorado Supreme Court Friday.
Party Chair Hannah Goodman will join Sunday's Colorado Show, so be sure to tune in!

While we're celebrating the nationwide victories for sanity here at Colorado Free Press, the "gold standard" election and its fallout are still very much ongoing.
Stay tuned!
