Beyond parody. On Monday, Aurora PD introduced a new crime fighting tactic amid rising crime in Colorado, writing on X:

"FREE Steering Wheel Locks From Aurora Police Department! 🚔

Beginning Monday, March 3, Aurora community members can pick up FREE steering wheel locks at APD Police Headquarters to help prevent auto theft.

Pick-Up Location: APD Police Headquarters, 15001 E. Alameda Parkway
Availability: First come, first served
Limit: 2 per household
Requirements: Must present current vehicle registration & valid auto insurance

This crime prevention initiative is made possible through the support of our state and federal partners, including the Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Authority. Don’t miss out – protect your vehicle and help us keep Aurora safe! 🚗"

They also posted a flyer:

The event was set to begin at 8AM on Monday, but at 9:55AM they posted that they ran out:

"UPDATE: That was fast! All of the free steering wheel locks are spoken for. We are putting in an order for more and hopefully will have them later this week. We will let the community know when additional free steering wheel locks are available."

No matter how they game the metrics, Colorado is much different today than it was before the pandemic, summer of love, and full blown communism. Instead of looking at crime statistics between this year and last year, let's compare now to pre Governor Jared Polis.

Since 2018, the year before Polis assumed power on January 8, 2019, violent crime is up 24.3% and property crime is up 39%. And consider this:

Between 2018 and 2022, Aurora experienced a 122.9%, increase in auto thefts. This trend has, according to the data, reversed in the past two years, but I'm skeptical with high demand for steering wheel locks.

Colorado needs to rethink its identity before electing the next generation of state leadership in 2026.

My favorite part of the Aurora announcement is the last line, "Don’t miss out – protect your vehicle and help us keep Aurora safe!"

Yeah, residents, help us stop your car from being stolen by adding security. We're all in this together. And we're certainly not going to recriminalize crime. The experiment is going so well!
